Jamie Young
COO and Co-Founder, Safeopedia

I believe that everybody has the right to get home safely to their families. Anything I can do to help promote and achieve a safer working environment I will do. Having spent the last 20+ years in the construction industry, I've seen my fair share of things that didn't need to happen.

I'm not a Safety Expert but firmly believe that by working together, we can spread the best industry knowledge and experience throughout the world. Can we constantly improve best practices and safety culture through open experience sharing, and ultimately prevent more incidents and save more lives? I believe we can. Working together, let's improve Safety to the maximum level. I support and recognize the valuable contribution made by EHS professionals, who are often under valued.

Our Mission is to create the single most comprehensive Environmental Health & Safety resource for safety minded professionals globally. All accidents are preventable so let's work together to improve the culture of public and workplace safety for everyone. Safety starts with you! Join the movement!

Keynote: To the Future of Safety…at 670 Million miles per hour!

The current capabilities, techniques, and systems of our profession will be obsolete in just a few years from now – and we will need to manage safety at the speed of light!

The cataclysmic impact of the Covid pandemic on society is nothing compared to what is coming…wait until you see what is next! Looking back from the future, say in 2040 to this year,2021 will seem like a little blip, a mere glitch, compared to what the next 2 decades hold for us. It is not another disease or virus, but an explosive change in technology, digitization, and socio-economic transformation.

The ‘future’ of industry 4.0 is being created as we speak, and yet, we have not even started in safety. We talk and quibble about Safety 2, HOP or the New View in Safety. Really? A few concepts that will be commonly used safety terms by 2040: Leaderless Safety, Latent Risk Metrics, Hyper-Connectivity, Supersonic Communication, Super Supervisors, Super Teams, Super Systems, Super Culture…and Superluminal Risk Optimization!

The 2040 safety conference will have presentations about Cognitive Astigmia, Compliance Atrophy, Interactive Myopia, Silo Schizophrenia, False Risks, Catastrophic Coupling, Catatonic Complexity, Digital Depletion, Rapid Risk Scenarios, 3D Risk Twins, Black Swans - Purple Dragons Is our safety profession of the future going to be equipped, ready, even capable to deal with this?

This keynote presentation will explore our journey to the future of safety, and beyond. It will show the radical changes awaiting the safety profession and what we will have to change now to even get to the future!

Keynote: ESG and EHS – Why and How an EHS Professional’s Job is About to Change

ESG – Environment, Social, and Governance – is all the rage. Whether its attention from investors that see ESG metrics as innovative risk indicators, attention from organizations that want to benchmark ESG performance against peers, or attention from consumers that want to use ESG data to inform purchase behaviors, the ability to collect, report, and improve ESG metrics will be a hallmark of leading businesses in the 2020s and beyond.

So why should EHS professionals pay attention? Because a significant portion of the ESG data that so many stakeholders are after will come directly from the EHS Department. Even more importantly, a significant burden of the responsibility for improving ESG performance will come from the EHS Department. This increasing spotlight on the role will equate to multiple material changes in tactical job requirements, executive visibility, organizational influence. Are you ready to embrace and take advantage of this change?

Please join Intelex’s Trevor Bronson, Strategic Development Manager, and Michael Tuohy, VP Environment and Sustainability for a 50-minute live session and Q&A all about the emergence of ESG and what it means for EHS professionals moving forward. Attendees can expect to learn:

What ESG is and what it isn’t Why ESG has emerged as such a hot topic in the corporate world How ESG will materially change the role an EHS professional Tactical and managerial changes EHS professionals should expect to make in the wake of ESG to position themselves and their business for success

The Great Debate on the New View of safety

The ‘New View’ in safety is getting a lot of “airtime” with several conference presentations and some progressive companies are deploying it. However, there are still many in the safety profession who claim it’s a fad, it will fade away or that it doesn’t work. The traditional view of safety, behavioral safety, and the focus on workers’ errors, is still alive and well, and the “news of its death is greatly exaggerated” they say.

Karen Study, Senior Director (Personal Safety) at Dow Chemical Company, is taking on two proponents and thought leaders of the New View, Todd Conklin and Corrie Pitzer, to challenge their ideas, as a ‘devils advocate’. Which side will you land?

Corrie Pitzer
CEO, Safemap International

Corrie Pitzer is the CEO and founder of Safemap International, a company specializing in the psychology of risk. He consults internationally to many corporations in mining, utilities, military defense and construction, all with occupations in which people can be seriously injured, or killed in their work…

He has Bachelors and Honors degrees in Industrial Psychology, Honors degree in Business Management, an MBA, and a Graduate Diploma in Education.

He was an Infantry Platoon commander, an Underground Miner and he has done every dirty job to earn money for his studies. Corrie enjoys skydiving, motorcycling and race car driving.
As a result, he knows more about risk than about safety.

Todd Conklin
Human & Organization Performance Consulting

Todd Conklin spent 25 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Senior Advisor for Organizational and Safety Culture. Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of the world’s foremost research and development laboratories; Dr. Conklin has been working on the Human Performance program for the last 15 years of his 25-year career. It is in this fortunate position where he enjoys the best of both the academic world and the world of safety in practice.

Conklin holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of New Mexico. He speaks all over the world to executives, groups and work teams who are interested in better understanding the relationship between the workers in the field and the organization’s systems, processes, and programs. He has brought these systems to major corporations around the world. Conklin practices these ideas not only in his own workplace, but also in the event investigations at other workplaces around the world. Conklin’s best selling book, Pre-Accident Investigations: An introduction to Organizational Safety is a best selling book on safety. Conklin has several other books and a huge podcast following for his twice-weekly podcast of the same name. Culture is spelled: C.R.A.P

With the worker at the front end of the business still seen as the problem and the weak link in safety, we are compelled to find ways to engage and motivate them - so they can work safely.

Culture is the new buzz word that is supposed to achieve that elusive goal... but exactly what is it, can it be changed and especially, can we measure it? This presentation will discuss the four essential characteristics of good safety culture: Compulsion (of behavior), Resilience, Alignment and Persistence. If it lacks any one of these, it will have no impact.

The presentation will show an advanced approach, model and measurement system called Prisma, that will change your world (and culture).

Keynote: Silent Heroes - Focus on the Gap Between the Cones

We all know and recognise the heroes we read about and see in the news and social media. We celebrate their achievements and hold them up as examples to our children and society. These are the employees that come up with the best ideas, they are engaged, verbal, pro-active, knowledgeable, and productive. They are (mostly) easy to manage and comply to your protocols and procedures and above all dependable. Wouldn’t it be great if you could have more of these people? What if you could only have superstars in your teams and how would that affect your safety performance? In this talk, we will discuss the silent heroes that lay dormant in your organisation. They are waiting for you to unlock their potential and fast-track your transformation to an operational culture filled with reliability, innovation, and resilience.

Breakout Session B – Seeing What Our Workers See

This session focuses on how leaders can better connect with their workers by seeing the environment as our workers do and understanding why workers interpret that environment as they do. Trust is at the heart of successful leader/employee relationships. Our willingness and ability to see each other’s reality enables trust.

Visual Literacy is a form of critical thinking that enables us to slow down and see more completely the environment and behaviors around us. Rather than simply looking and drawing quick conclusions that are influenced by our experiences, expectations and biases, we can learn how to see more objectively and completely. The tools associated with Visual Literacy can enable leaders to see through the eyes of their employees in a different and more meaningful way.

In this session, participants will learn:

  • • What Visual Literacy is and how it can enable leaders to better connect with their workers.
  • • How bias influences our interpretation of what we see and how we see it.
  • • How an over reliance on checklists and audit forms can limit what we see.
  • • How practical tools can improve leaders' ability to overcome visual biases and see what our workers see.

Participants in this session will leave with some basic tools that will immediately improve their ability in Seeing the Whole PICTURE™.

Breakout Session C – Pioneering Safety as Brilliant as our Diamonds

At De Beers, our ambition is to pioneer a new diamond world and to do this, we ensure that our diamonds are delivered with “brilliant safety”. Safety is in our DNA, in our people, in everything we do, as brilliant as our diamonds. We have developed a Strategic Framework which is an innovative approach to safety maturity. Just like the quality of our diamonds are measured with the 4 C’s (Cut, Carat, Clarity and Color), our safety strategy consist of 4 C’s (Culture, Competence, Cultivation and Connectedness). Our journey is the transformation of the entire organisation to a level of maturity, where safety is inherent in all we do. We focus on leadership and culture development, dynamic risk systems, and measuring ourselves not against what already happened, but against what might happen next. In our approach, people are the strongest link in our safety chain, ready to respond to risks, and to be leaders in their own teams. Our Pioneering Brilliant Safety Framework was introduced in January 2021, in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic, across all facets of the business from exploration through to mining and retail, and we are on the way! Like true pioneers, we are entering into unchartered waters, to lead, not to follow, in our industry, in industry and globally. Tracy Folorunsho-Barry
Owner of GROW Women Leaders

Tracy Folorunsho-Barry is an award-winning, equitable leadership career strategist who has dedicated her career to help women, especially BIWOC and immigrants, to access new opportunities.

In 2017, under GROW Foundation, Tracy launched Project150: Accomplished Immigrant Women in Canada where she began gathering stories from more than 200 immigrant women across Canada who had overcome adversity to achieve success in their careers and lives. Many women who shared their stories often shared their desire for knowledge, resources and guidance they wish they had along the way. As she collected their stories of resilience, Tracy realized this wealth of knowledge could add valuable insights to other immigrant women and the communities, so she published the collection of their experiences in a book; “Untold Stories Of Immigrant Women in Canada: Challenges, Successes & Accomplishments, published in 2017.

Tracy knew her work did not stop there, she saw that there were still gaps in empowerment, leadership and career development services for immigrant women and realized she could do something to bridge those gaps.

So in 2019, she founded GROW Women Leaders (GROW), a leadership career development and advancement platform designed to help BIWOC and immigrant women get hired, turn ideas into reality and advance their careers. She wanted these woman transcend and reach their full potential in personal development, leadership, civic engagement and entrepreneurship.

In the last few years, GROW has supported women in Alberta and across the country by equipping them with the skills, tools, and resources they need to lead and advance their careers.

Tracy is a certified career strategist and qualified equitable leadership expert with over 10 years of community and development services experience, with a postgraduate degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Mental Health (CPSR) from Humber College, Toronto.

Although the overarching principles and values of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion remain relatively unchanged overtime; the way we talk about these themes evolves overtime. Conference Wrap Up & Review with your Hosts

Scott Cuthbert
CEO and Co-Founder, Safeopedia

Scott works with companies in the energy sector who recognize the value in leveraging technology to improve the quality of operational information and by doing so improve productivity, effectiveness and safety. While working in the energy industry Scott realized how important safety is but also noticed how splintered safety is across the industry. As a technology guy with the desire to help improve the culture of health and safety Scott realized he could help the industry help itself by creating a platform for individuals, companies, associations, safety professions, and suppliers, to collaborate across this vast and widely divers industry.
